I think the eggs have some sort of rebirth symbolism. Much of Christian holiday ritual or decoration is 'borrowed' from other religions anyway. I'm not sure the historical Jesus, if he existed, can be said to have chosen to die. There is considerable discussion about whether this idea is a re-imagining of earlier religions that embraced the idea of sacrifice. Religions love sacrifice. Wherever you go in the world and through history religions are sacrificing goats, maidens, first-borns. It's a quite a pernicious thing. Jesus was executed. And in a manner common to the place and period. On the other hand it is possible to survive crucifixion. Some people do it today in order to experience 'the pain of Christ' (which is altogether taking things way too far). But I quite like Easter. Movies like Ben Hur and The Robe impressed me as a kid and I kind of get it even though I don't buy into it... if that makes sense. Easter will be a very tough gig while the world copes with COVID-19. Due to the danger not being taken seriously enough early enough, and other issues, the United States is now among the worst-hit major population centres in the developed world. I hope you and your family stay safe, stay happy and find some way to enjoy your Easter traditions. And that we all get through this.
ReplyDeleteI see where you're coming from and to a degree, believe it or not, I agree. There are so many aspects of religion and sadly some take it way too far and death occurs or they become sheep and follow someone's false interpretation. I don't consider myself a "religious" person, nope, not at all. I do believe in Jesus Christ, and I do read and follow my KJV or Geneva Bible, but I refuse to follow any person that likes to put in their opinions or makes up stuff that is not biblically accurate. I've quit going to church, and I'll follow some pastors online, but honestly, just because someone calls them self a "Christian" doesn't mean they are one. I jut got tired of all the BS and hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteCOVID-19 has become a nightmare for so many of us, it's pretty terrifying, the toilet paper, the masks, disinfectants that people are hoarding is unbelievable. Hospitals are desperate for the masks and gloves. And people are hoarding.
Unfortunately, I was told a couple of days ago, that many of our staff was laid off, but I'm one of the lucky ones that gets to continue going to work. Ughh...
When did you stop going to church? That does surprise me.
ReplyDeleteOf course, right now nobody should be gathering in any crowd. Some religious groups - not just Christian, others too - ignored the warnings and now some of them are dead and they've risked the lives of others.
I can work from home but my wife is a nurse... The expectation is that this will peak here, in Australia, in May, and then she may not be able to come home. She'll live and work at the hospital till the crisis has passed.
10 goofball idiots get together for choir practice or something.. and that becomes a cluster for transmission... putting everyone's lives at risk - especially someone like my wife.
So far we are at 30 dead, nation-wide.
It's worth noting that South Korea and the United States both had their first confirmed case on the same date. Yet South Korea has less than 200 dead, while the United States is at over 5000 and it's projected that 4-5 times as many Americans who died in the Vietnam War will die of COVID-19. Yet the United States has less than 7 times South Korea's population. Do the math... why is the American death-rate so astronomically greater than South Korea's? Why has America been so vulnerable. Why was this whole thing called a hoax or dismissed in the critical early weeks when the spread could have been slowed?
It had already been killing a frightening number of people in China for weeks... Did the people in America who called it a hoax think the Chinese weren't real people? That people in Italy or Spain weren't real people?
Looking at you FOX News.
We don't what the world will look like economically on the other side of this either. Very bad, for a very long time, most likely.
It's been a least 3 years, I think. I guess I finally got fed up with how people were behaving and preaching. Don't get me wrong, there are A LOT of sincere and beautiful Christian people, who truly loved the Lord, but others were there for show and I just hate hypocrisy. So, I follow pastors that I have trusted for years and listen to them on podcasts or on the radio, and now even on Youtube or Facebook. I do miss the worship music, though.
DeleteYou're wife must be exhausted!! Poor thing. I know the medical staff are being over-worked and are putting themselves at risk, I hope you both stay safe and sickness free. People need to stay home if they are not considered, "essential" period. It's just not worth the risk.
The media has a great way of twisting the truth about COVID-19. Our POTUS was doing his best to stop people from coming in our country. He's tried so many times to keep the public aware and sadly, the media would either make up stuff he said or twist his words. I do follow him on Twitter and I do follow the White House newsletters to get the truth. But no, he or the COVID-19 team took this very seriously. At this point, all that matters now is that lives be saved. Politics aside. People should come first.
I hope you and your wife will ride the storm safe and sound.
Here are some statements by your POTUS and the dates on which he said them. You can check he did actually say this, if you like, none of it is made up:
DeleteJanuary 22nd: "We have it totally under control"
February 26th: "The 15 cases within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero"
February 27th: "One day it's like a miracle, it will disappear"
March 10th: "It will go away"
Three days after that last one... a National Emergency was declared.
Fox News were telling their audience it was a hoax aimed at destabilizing Trump... somehow... and he believed that because Fox News (which is designed to be propaganda) and him are a closed loop. He looks to them for approval, because that is what his support base watches.
The lack of preparation and lack of willingness to take it seriously is killing thousands of Americans. And as I told you above - and you can go and check all of that too - the death rate from infection in America is well above the global average.
He and his administration have not handled this well. They're killing their citizens by negligence.
I know you're not a fan of Trump, but he has been blocked by Congress and the media is very skilled at twisting and editing the things that he said. I follow him on Twitter and the White House newsletter and he's been trying to stay on top of this. The death tolls are being exaggerated. One nurse for instance had mentioned that two of her patients had died of different diagnosis and the next day, someone had changed it to COVID-19.
DeleteHe has worked tirelessly trying to get the stimulus to everyone but Congress continued to block him and fight him on it.
It's a mess, I won't argue that, but we are doing a lot better than other nations. I'm NOT happy about all the restrictions, and now our town is under a curfew, etc.
I just hope that the end of this thing will come soon. I'm tired and I wish I could rest from the stress of being an "essential" worker.
It's not about whether I approve of Trump, it's about outcomes, pure and simple. The US death toll is not exaggerated, please don't fall for that lie because that is a continuation of the original lie that this was a hoax to 'get' Trump. THAT lie has now killed thousands of Americans. It has to stop.
ReplyDelete"one nurse had mentioned" is not a body of evidence. It's not a medical assessment. It's not a statistical analysis. It's just hearsay.
The stimulus also has nothing to do with the death toll or a medical response. The stimulus is an economic measure, a version of the stimulus that most developed economies in the world are doing.
My country has had 57 deaths, so far, TOTAL - TOTAL, Leticia - since this thing began. You're losing thousands EVERY DAY. The US death toll has now gone past Italy's. America is now one of the worst places in the free world to be during this crisis.
The blaming of foreigners, or China, or whatever scapegoat bit of xenophobia doesn't pass the logic test. Foreigners or China don't run the US hospital system, Americans do. The deceptive finger pointing cannot erase the manifest reality that your government has failed you. More than that, the corrupt Right wing ideology that has left it so poorly prepared has failed all Americans.
This is my first time i visit here. I found so many interesting stuff in your blog especially its discussion. From the tons of comments on your articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the enjoyment here keep up the good work acim and the bible
